Frequently Asked Questions

Allergies and allergic reactions

1. Does my child have a cold, flu or allergies?

It’s easy to confuse a cold or flu and allergies as the symptoms can be very similar. One of the main differences is that allergies itch. This can include an itchy nose, throat, eyes and even your skin. Although you may experience nasal discharge as a result of colds and allergies, the discharge during an allergic episode is likely to be thin, watery and clear rather than thick and cloudy, as it is during a cold. In addition, fever does not usually accompany allergies.

2. What are allergies?

Allergies are over active immune responses to normally harmless substances in our environment. When your child is exposed to that substance their immune system incorrectly interprets the substance as a threat. In an attempt to protect itself, the body releases chemicals into the bloodstream and these chemicals result in sneezing, runny noses, and itchy, watery eyes.

3. What can I do when my child has an allergic reaction?

There are many ways to manage allergic reactions including oral antihistamines, medicated and non-medicated nasal sprays and antihistamine eye drops.

These are not the only ways to manage allergies, for more information and other treatment options speak to your healthcare professional.

4. What types of oral antihistamines are available to help relieve allergy symptoms?

There are two main groups of oral antihistamines; first generation antihistamines and second generationantihistamines.

First generation antihistamines include Diphenhydramine, Chlorpheniramine, Brompheniramineand Promethazine. These antihistamines are usually used for short-term allergy relief and may cause short term sedation.

Second generation antihistamines include Cetirizine,Loratadine and Terfenadine. Second generation antihistaminesare usually used for longer-term allergy relief and are less likely to cause sedation.

Little Allergies for Children is classified as a second generation antihistamine. It is fast-acting and children can carry on enjoying life without worrying about allergies.

5. What types of medicated and non-medicated nasal sprays are available to help relieve allergy symptoms?

Non-medicated saline nasal sprays such as Children’s FESS® and FESS Little Noses® help wash away allergens and bring relief from a blocked nose.

Your healthcare professional may recommend medicated nasal sprays such as antihistamine sprays or corticosteroid nasal sprays. Antihistamine nasal sprays can help a runny nose and sneezing. Corticosteroid nasal sprays help to reduce inflammation.
